Time is the most precious and important commodity in our life. We have to just know it. Generally people believe that ‘Time Management’ is to complete our task on time or going to school, collage and office on time and discard at closing time. But the time management is not these things. It is holistic system and process that can make all area of our life more balanced and fulfilling.

Time is slipping from our hand just like grains of sand, it is impossible to return it. The people who use time wisely from their child-hood they get the good return and they become rich, productive and have the good life. So we can say in simple word - ‘time mastery is life mastery’.

Generally we are telling, ‘I am busy I don’t have time’. We have attended many time management workshops/ seminars and still we are not able to manage the time. We know every one in this earth have 24 hours only whether we are in India, USA, UK or Australia. People like A P J Abdul Kalam, Mukesh Ambani and Kumar Mangalam Birla, you and me - we all have 24 hours allotted to each by nature. We can see the high productivity people are highly efficient with their time.

We have to protect and guard our time. We can say time is non-renewable resource. Most important thing is our personal, social and spiritual development. We should spare some time to develop these things and keep in our daily agenda book. You know this simple act is the secret to balance our life - by focusing on these most important aspects in our daily routine schedule. It leads to our life of meaning, peace and happiness.

The ancient rule of twenty says that eighty percent of the results we achieve in our life come from only twenty percent activities which are done only by time management. If you think just two minutes on this rule you automatically able to see that this is actually real.

After understanding the importance of time, the question that comes to our mind is what are the ways and techniques by which we can value our time. These techniques are:

  • Prioritize. It means to do the work according to the importance of the work. Example: You are general manager of XYZ Company and you have to manage 3 meetings on same day and same time. Like one meeting of Staff, second of HR meeting and third is foreign delegates. Then obviously in same time you can’t arrange three meetings. So you have to choose which meeting is most important. In our case hypothetically let’s say foreign delegate meeting is more important. So we have to manage our work accordingly its importance.

  • The very important point is that don’t let others steal your time. This thing is often occurring in our daily routine. Suppose you are doing you work and your friend comes and says, “Please join me for tea for 2 minutes.” So he has broken the link of your work and also stolen you time. So we must take care of this.

  • If you want to be master of time you have to cultivate the habit of saying NO. Someone truly said that said that one NO in life will give you the power to say YES for the big things.

  • Generally, we are all using our cell phones. It is not necessary to receive all the phones which come. Time is money and you are losing precious money by attending to apparently ‘free incoming calls’ by attending many unnecessary calls. Cell phone is for your convenience not for others’ convenience.

I hope this small article will force you to review regarding how you are managing your time. If it helps in improving your utilization of time, I will feel rewarded.
